Equine Reiki & the Reiki Precepts
Just for today…
do not anger
We know that the Precepts were created by Mikao Usui as an example of how we should endeavour to live each day, reflecting upon how we can improve the way we think, feel and behave in order to live a more balanced, contented and enjoyable life, often encouraging those around us to do the same. This is all well and good for us and our relationships with other humans, but how do the Precepts affect our relationship with our horse? As an Equine Reiki Practitioner you will already know that whatever emotional ‘state’ you are in when you come into contact with your horse, will have a positive or negative impact on your horse at that point in time. Your horse can be extremely good at ‘mirroring’ whatever state you are in. For example, you might have had an argument with someone before you go and visit your horse. You probably want to escape and help yourself to some healing ‘horse energy’ which is a good thing to do in itself. However, if you haven’t cleared yourself of this negative emotion before you get to your horse, the chances are that your horse will reflect your leftover feelings straight back at you. A recipe for potential conflict!Remember, your horse is highly sensitive and always ready for a ‘flight’ reaction at any ‘sense’ of danger. Your horse always receives the vibration of your thoughts and feelings (emotions) and will react to those vibrations, often creating an imbalance for your horse (as well as youself). It is therefore better to emit positive, calming and relaxing vibrations when you are with your horse so that s/he can enjoy the sense of calm, peace and wellbeing. You will be in better balance as well of course! As we work through the Reiki Precept do not anger… think about times when you have been with your horse in a less than calm and relaxed state and what the outcome was…The following outlines what anger is and how it affects our health and wellbeing (balance), what you can do to help rid yourself of this feeling using Reiki, Crystals, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), Meditation and Affirmations. At least one of these techniques can be used quickly and effectively in any situation where you feel yourself becoming angry. The key point is to be able to allow your ‘balanced state’ to be recovered as quickly as possible (if you can’t prevent the feeling of anger in the first place). You do not want to harbour these feelings as they can have a negative impact on your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. At the bottom of the article, you will find your Personal Action Plan which I encourage you to complete as it will remind you of how you have been able to change your angry emotions to being relaxed about the situation that caused them in the first place.
What is Anger?
Anger is a negative feeling ‘state’ that we experience when someone has said or done something that we don’t appreciate or we are in a situation that we cannot control. Anger produces the energy within us in order to respond. We have a choice of ‘flight’ or ‘fight’ which relates to our basic survival which would have been extremely useful when we were hunter-gatherers. This physical response created by our bodies releases stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) which prompt us to take the action we feel necessary at that time. However, in today’s society this type of response is no longer appropriate, but our hormones still respond in the same way.Often anger is often released by shouting, arguing, swearing, being sarcastic or throwing things around. Sometimes people can become physically aggressive and this leads to more serious issues. However, if we keep our anger to ourselves, it will fester and we might look at other ways to let go of the anger such as:
- alcohol
- drugs
- risk taking
- accidents
- erratic driving
- causing interpersonal relationship conflicts at work or at home
What effect do angry feelings have on our bodies?
Anger can cause our heart rate and blood pressure to increase, dizziness, a dry mouth, muscles to become tense and perhaps a headache. Ongoing anger can also affect the liver, cardiovascular, immune, digestive and central nervous systems. Ultimately this could lead to more serious health conditions such as stoke, heart disease, stomach and other gastric ulcers, bowel disease and increase the risk of cancer. How can you calm your anger naturally?By using Reiki!

When you feel that you are becoming angry, it is best to try and walk away from the situation before you decide to say or do something you might later regret. When you are in a place on your own simply:
- Tune into the Reiki healing energy.
- Place your hands in Gassho (Prayer Position) and hold them at the Heart Chakra.
- Take three deep breaths.
- Then place your hands on your Solar Plexus – this is where we hold our emotions and by giving the healing energy to the Chakra it will help to calm the angry emotions.
- Next place your hands on your Throat Chakra – this will help you to express your feelings in a more constructive and assertive manner that will help you to solve the problem and deal with the situation that caused the anger.
- Take three more deep breaths and relax.
Meditation
Meditation is a wonderful way to relax and calm the mind. It can help you let go of any negative thoughts and feelings and help to produce emotional balance. It can also reduce blood pressure. Even a few minutes sitting quietly and just letting go of your angry thoughts will produce a sense of peace.Crystals
Crystals can be very grounding when held during meditation or when you just need to re-focus your thoughts. Simply hold the crystal in the left hand with any point facing up your left arm and take some deep breaths. Then focus on the crystal itself and concentrate on its colour, how it feels, the energy that is coming from it and anything else that you notice about the crystal. Often you can notice thoughts that might help the situation you are in. Crystals to use for anger include:

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
Using EFT when you immediately start to feel angry can help prevent the emotions becoming out of control. It can help to change your ‘state’ so that you can have a different perspective on the situation. To start take a deep breath and then start tapping:
Karate Chop Point
even though I am feeling really angry about xxx I am OK with this
Eye Brow
it is OK for me to feel this anger
Side of Eye
but I know it is not good for my health
Under Eye
and I know I can change this emotion easily and quickly
Under Nose
I will let go of this anger right now
Chin
and in letting go of this anger I can be at peace with myself
Top of Head
and all those who are involved in the situation that has made me feel angry
Gamut Point
I know that this situation and all the anger that I have been feeling can be resolved quickly and for the good of all concernedPut your hands together, look up, look down, look right, look left and circle your eyes clockwise and then anticlockwise.
Take a couple of deep breaths and relax.Affirmations
Affirmations are great at helping you to change your perspective on things that are happening around you. You can use them to put into your EFT round of tapping so that you can create a different ‘feeling’ about the situation or you can simply choose one of them and say it to yourself until you are calmer and have a different view of the event.

My Personal Action Points:
It is often helpful to reflect on how anger has affected you and to write down those things that helped you to calm down and be more relaxed about the situation. Next time you feel angry you can come back to these points and put them to use immediately.
