Mutual trust
When you are using Reiki for the first time with your horse, he or she will be aware of the energy and as something different. Your horse can take to the ‘new’ energy straight away and know exactly how it will help, or it will be a little nervous about what the energy is.
It is important that you are calm and quiet and just let your horse smell your Reiki charged hands and decide what it wants to do. Don’t be disappointed if it just looks at you in disgust and backs away – this often happens the first time!
Don’t let this put you off. Some of the horses I have treated have taken a few times before they have completely trusted me or understood what the energy is all about. Horses know whether they need the Reiki energy or not and will tell you in no uncertain terms. Just go with the flow of energy.
Horses will sometimes want you to spend a long time giving them Reiki for one treatment and then the next time you offer healing, they might just walk away from you. The horse really is in charge – you just have to be offering your services!
As long as you provide what your horse wants and when he or she wants it, you will find that trust will develop quite quickly and the horse can get to the point where he or she will come and ask you for Reiki. This is the best outcome for all and it is always a wonderful experience when I am asked to give Reiki rather than to offer it first.
Developing the spiritual connection with your horse
Of course when you feed, groom and work with your horse you develop and build a close relationship but to create a deep spiritual connection between you, you also need a mutual trust, respect and admiration and to be a part of one another’s daily lives.
Take time to just ‘be’ with your horse, to let your horse do his or her own thing with you there. Allow your horse to smell, nuzzle, lick and love you. Offer your healing hands to your horse and let him put his body where he needs the Reiki healing. Quietly sing or chant the symbols (if you have achieved Reiki Second Degree) to your horse and just enjoy your partnership. Keep your mind free from other thoughts, just be in your horse’s time and space. You are being a member of the ‘herd’ and allowing your horse to just be at one with you.
Your hands are your healing energy tools and as you help your horse to de-stress, relieve pain and create relaxation this continues to build your spiritual connection. Your horse will know that you can do these wonderful things for him or her and will give you signs of where your hands need to be. It is also great to give little massages where you feel tension when you give Reiki healing. One of the calming places on the horse is at the bottom of the neck. In the wild, horses will nuzzle each other at this spot in order to produce calm.

I hope this encourages you to take some time out with your horse and find out how you connect with each other when working with the Reiki. Look for the signs of relaxation in your horse and let me know if you notice anything different.
Enjoy each other’s company and have a wonderful experience together!
