Example of a hands-off Equine Reiki treatment
Reiki healing energy is being channeled by a Reiki Master, Brenda Stevens, to one of the lovely retired racehorses at the Greatwood Charity in Marlborough, Wiltshire. Reiki is being ‘beamed’ to the horse and is having the required calming, relaxing effect.
What can Reiki do for my horse?
- Arthritis
- Colic
- Loss of appetite
- Physical injuries
- Reducing stress
- Relieving anxiety
- Spooking
- Wind sucking
- Nervousness
- Improving your relationship with your horse
- Helping the natural healing process
- Improving the owner’s riding experience
- How will my horse respond to Reiki?
Most horses enjoy the Reiki healing energy and will relax quite quickly. If given regularly (perhaps as part of the grooming routine) Reiki will help them to maintain their health and allow them to be peaceful and calm. Your horse will also let you know when s/he wants healing and will move away when s/he has had enough of the healing energies. It is always best to work with your horse and give Reiki where and when it is needed.
The benefits of daily Equine Reiki
As a Reiki Practitioner you know that to make your Reiki strong and become a powerful channel for the Reiki healing energy, it is beneficial for you to set a few minutes aside (or longer if possible) every day so that you can take on the benefits of positive healing energy. This helps to keep you balanced, peaceful and enhances your feeling of general wellbeing.
Why give Reiki to your horse every day?
You know that your horse ‘picks up’ on how you are feeling – good or bad – so it makes sense that you put in a little effort to be the best you can be, not only for yourself but for your horse as well. He or she will appreciate that you are in a good place when you visit and if you share the healing your horse will be much more ‘in tune’ with you. The aim is for horse and owner to become ‘one’.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits in sharing Reiki with your horse – here are just a few:
- it will help to improve your relationship with your horse through improving communication and understanding between you
- it becomes a daily therapy for your horse which your horse will enjoy and look forward to
- it can improve your horse’s behaviour before you ride – setting you both up for an enjoyable time together
- it can help to improve your own riding and self-confidence as you are relaxed, at ease and in balance
When is a good time to share Reiki with your horse?
Ideally, it is best to share the energy with your horse when you are grooming as it can easily be incorporated into the process.
How do I give Reiki when grooming my horse?
There are several ways to work with Reiki when grooming – here is one example:
1. Once you are ready to start grooming, focus on the outcome that you would like with your horse and state your desired outcome to yourself, for example: ‘I intend that we both enjoy this special time together and that we feel calm, relaxed and energised at the end of this Reiki grooming session.’
2. Take a few minutes to merge with the Reiki energy and just be with your horse and feel the energy flowing to both of you.
3. As you start grooming your horse, continue to visualise the Reiki energy merging with your brush and flowing into your horse with every stroke.
4. Continue with the grooming and remain connected to the Reiki energy, noticing the effects on your horse as you progress.
5. When you have finished grooming, disconnect from the Reiki energy remembering to thank your Reiki guides and those who have connected with you.
6. Offer your horse some water as like us, he or she might feel a little thirsty after the session.
How long should the Reiki treatment be?
You will treat for as long as your horse allows. It might be that 10 minutes is as long as your horse will standstill or it could be longer particularly if there is an issue to be dealt with. For example, I have treated horses with arthritis and they have all been happy to stand there for as long as the Reiki continued to flow (for up to 1.5 hours with one horse).
How often should I give Reiki to my horse?
To get good results with your horse, it is best to give Reiki every time you visit, and every time you groom your horse as this will keep them (and you) topped up with positive Reiki energy. Your horse will get used to having Reiki and should respond more quickly as he or she understands how it feels. The regularity of having Reiki treatments will also continue to improve your communication and relationship with your horse. So both parties win!
Can I ride my horse immediately after Reiki?
Like humans, it is always best to let your horse rest after Reiki as the physical body will be responding and rebalancing energies. Often horses are tired after Reiki so it is best to make sure they have water and food available and let them have time to take on board the positive energy and to rest.
One of my equine clients took two days to rebalance after a very long Reiki treatment. After he had ‘recovered’ he had so much energy that his owner thought she had a different horse!

Reiki for horse and owner
Reiki is a gentle Japanese energy-balancing method which can be a ‘hands’on’ or ‘hands-off’ treatment technique. It was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900′s and is used for self-healing, self-development and treating other people or animals. Reiki is not a religion.
Reiki is very gentle and once you are attuned to the Reiki symbols you can start to work on your own energies as well as your horse. I find that working with horse and owner produces wonderful outcomes for both parties and strengthens the relationship between horse and human.
Reiki Jane offers Equine Reiki primarily as Online Courses
“Great training with Jane this week – loved the Equine Reiki energy. My Reiki healing energy abilities have improved tremendously since the course. I am using Jane’s meditations every day and my horse is just loving it! Following my course I went straight back home to my own horse and he gave me the ‘look’ – he just knows what I can do for him. It’s amazing! Thanks Jane, I will be back for more soon.”
Kate, Wiltshire
“Jane is a friendly and confident teacher. She made the Equine Reiki course very enjoyable. I came home with a folder packed with great information. I feel very excited with my new found knowledge and cannot wait to get started on my horse.”

Reiki for your equine friends
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a simple Japanese energy balancing technique that can be used for healing humans and animals.
How many treatments?
While a one-off Reiki treatment will do something beneficial for your horse, bringing a sense of calm and peacefulness and maybe producing some short-term physical benefits too, the best results come from having a course of treatments, maybe 4-6 weekly sessions. It really does depend on the horse!
Reiki and horses
Reiki is ideal for horses because it is gentle and non-invasive. It doesn’t cause stress, discomfort or pain and yet can produce powerful results. Horses respond intuitively to Reiki and it helps healthy animals maintain their health at the same time as enhancing relaxation, providing a sense of peace and contentment.
For horses that are ill, Reiki is a wonderful healing method as well as a safe complement to all other forms of healing.
For dying horses, Reiki is a powerful but gentle way to provide comfort, relief from pain, fear and anxiety.
Before treating your horse with Reiki
Before the first Reiki treatment you will need to gain veterinary approval that Reiki can be given to your horse. This is usually just a phone call to your Veterinary Practice and should be made by you prior to the first treatment.
NOTE: Reiki is not a substitute for veterinary treatment. If there are any symptoms of illness you should make contact with your vet as soon as you can.
Reiki is safe and will work with other forms of complementary treatment.
A Reiki practitioner will not diagnose or recommend any form of treatment.
Equine Reiki treatments
The Reiki treatment is not intended to replace or act as an alternative to conventional treatments give by the vet. You are required to advise your veterinary surgeon of the intention to use complementary therapy as a support system to be used alongside conventional treatments.
