Spring is just around the corner and many of you will probably be thinking about riding your horse more often, perhaps show jumping, dressage and hacking. Like most other things in life, riding your horse requires not only skill and knowledge but confidence in yourself as well as your horse. When you get a little nervous or stressed, your horse immediately picks up on that emotion or feeling and will reflect back to you by demonstrating the same by the way he or she behaves. If you are in a positive, focused and confident ‘state’ then you can both have a really enjoyable time together. Like attracts like!
The Power of Visualisation, Intention & Energy Exercises before you Ride
By using energy work with ourselves and our horses we are developing our relationship with them. Through the use of visualisation, intention and energy exercises, you can continue to improve and develop your connection with your horse as well as your riding ability. As you continue to use these tools, you will quickly and easily become more confident in yourself and your horse will notice and do the same.
By giving yourself a few minutes before you begin to work with your horse, you have the opportunity to relieve everyday stresses and strains and a chance to focus on the outcome that you would like with your horse. When you greet your horse you will be in a state of calm. Your horse can then ‘let go’ of his or her issues more quickly as he or she will take on the peaceful energy that comes from you.
If you haven’t studied Reiki before you can use visualisation and intention as these will work for you. If you are a Reiki First or Second Degree student, you can use the Reiki Energy Exercises together with the visualisation and intention exercises. By using the Reiki symbols you will enhance the whole process and produce a stronger effect. Have a go at all three, individually and then all three together and see what happens!
Visualise your Ride
This involves taking 10-15 minutes of your time before you start working with your horse and should be done in a quiet place if possible (for the best effect):
1. Sit in a comfortable place, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths in order to calm your mind and body.
2. Ground and protect yourself as normal before starting the visualisation process.
2. Start to visualise (or imagine) making a good connection with your horse, tacking up and mounting him or her.
3. As you start to visualise your ride, go through the ride from beginning to end (when you dismount) and start to notice everything around you and your horse. The view that you have, both near to you and in the distance, the sounds that you will hear – your horses hooves on the ground, the sound of the bit, the creaking of the saddle. What you will feel – maybe wind on your face, the warmth of the sun on your back, the smooth movement of your horse beneath you. The emotions that you will experience – joy, fun, laughter, excitement. What scents are in the air? – farmyard smells, wet grass, the smell of your horse. Are there any tastes that come to mind to remind you of a good ride – perhaps a bacon sandwich after the ride or a cup of hot chocolate?
4. As you visualise the whole picture of your riding experience from beginning to end, start to make everything you visualise bigger and brighter, full of colour and sensations, really enjoy yourself in your visualisation. Feel the freedom, the confidence and the happiness that you will experience.
5. When you have visualised the whole ride from beginning to end and feel good about yourself, bring your hands together in Prayer position and bring your hands up to place your thumbs against your
Third Eye Chakra in order to seal the visualisation.
6. Now take a deep breath and open your eyes.
7. Take a drink of water and bring yourself back to the here and now.
8. Go and have fun!
Intention is Everything
Simply sit quietly for a few minutes and think about your ride and intend that you will both have a wonderful time together. Then send positive affirmations to yourself, your horse and the ride itself. You can also use EFT Tapping Points to have a greater impact:
Affirmations – examples

I am a very capable rider
