Why are you stressed? Your past can have an effect on your present when it comes to physical, mental and emotional health, but often you are not aware of this, you just know that you feel ‘stressed’ or unwell. You might feel physical pain or experience extreme emotions that are ‘out of character’. The following might help to explain why this happens.
The connection between a healthy mind and a healthy body is relaxation. To ensure that the body is fit and free from disease and that you are at peace mentally can be achieved through relaxation as it involves both physical and mental states.
When we are young we collect experiences in our memories. Some of the events that happen to us create reactions that are not helpful to us. Traumatic experiences can be held in our system and produce serious psychological issues and physical disease.
Our memories become distant, but are held in the subconscious mind and become part of us – in our physical makeup, body language and behaviours. As the body stores all of our subconscious and conscious material, it memorises events and creates habitual behaviour until these memories are conciously changed.
The body never forgets anything and does not lie to us whereas the mind will mask or filter our experiences. Tension is built and maintained in the body and this develops into a massive energy which is held or ‘stuck’. This energy can then create physical pain. Once the tension is released it provides great relief as the energy becomes fluid again.
To reduce or remove these unhelpful memories we need to relax both mind and body through relaxation therapy. Here are some of the issues that can be helped through relaxation:
- insomnia
- sciatica
- constipation
- migraine and headaches
- asthma
- palpitations
- anxiety attacks
- anger and temper
- allergies
One of the main causes of stress is that we are out of balance and not in touch with our basic bodily needs. By practicing conscious relaxation we become more self-aware as we bring our mind and body together in order to re-balance.
As life today creates stresses through noise, long working hours, relationships with others, financial difficulties and other matters we have little time and means that we do not create time for ourselves or others. Alternatives are then used to relax and include TV, alcohol, food and sometimes drugs. Unfortunately, these relaxation methods tend to exacerbate the problem.
This is why seeking help from a complementary therapist is valuable in today’s world as you need to have time for yourelf and more importantly, to learn how to relax. After your complementary therapy session, always try to take some ‘me time’ and sit down in a peaceful and calm place, even if just for a few minutes to give yourself time to breathe deeply and refocus. Take time for a meditation – often 5 minutes is all that is needed to bring you back into balance.
